About

Laura Galbato

It all began with a broken vintage piggy bank.

My introduction to the world of mosaic art began with a red vintage ceramic piggy bank. My grandparents painted the names of their nine grandchildren on the side of the piggy bank and proudly displayed it in their kitchen.

Being the oldest grandchild, the piggy bank was shipped to me after my grandparents passed in 2003. It arrived broken. Wanting to preserve its memory, I discovered a local mosaic art studio and created a table with the broken pieces.

I believe that mosaic art is much like life. In life, when we look at things differently, we discover joy and beauty, even amidst sadness and chaos. With mosaic art, broken pieces and seemingly unusable materials are transformed into colorful art with endless creative possibilities.

My Work

I love creating mosaic art and the balance it brings to my life. It is gratifying and combines the act of designing with the satisfaction of physically building art.

With an infinite range of colors and textures, I use a variety of tesserae, including glass, smalti, marble, slate, ceramic, stone, found objects, beads, and upcycled jewelry. My designs begin with a sketch or a photograph that I have taken.

All tesserae are hand cut, creating shapes that fit together to create flow, movement and balance. Many of my mosaic designs are grouted to unite the piece and emphasize the tesserae colors, while other designs are created in thin-set mortar.

My Studies

Creating mosaic art is my passion. To learn and grow in this incredible art, I traveled nationally and internationally to study under globally-recognized artists, completed numerous online courses, and advanced through self-study and experimentation. I continue to study, learn, and engage with the global community of mosaic artists.

My Life

I love to create. I also enjoy hiking, bicycling, golf, reading, and a good glass of champagne. My husband and I have been married for 35 years and we divide our time between Issaquah, Washington and Naples, Florida. We have two children.
